Dan Baldwin, British artist, the art works are highly sought after and have been exhibited at solo shows in Paris, NYC, L.A, London, Newcastle, & Brighton.

Dan Baldwin has worked with brands as diverse as Max Factor and Paolo Nutini, is published by CCA galleries and his art is owned by Sir Ronald Cohen, Bernie & Petra Ecclestone, and Damien Hirst, among many others

Dan Baldwin creates a landscape that simultaneously reflects reality, the power of the imagination and the private, inner workings of his mind. His style has a unique aesthetic which is difficult to categorize. Working by instinct, it can change dramatically depending on the subject matter he is exploring and the emotions he is channelling.

Dan Baldwin creates a unique and immediately recognisable vision in his silkscreen prints. His work is at once both abstract and figurative, reflecting both reality and the world of imagination. Dan Baldwin’s subject matter is the interior of his own mind, from rumination on love, memory or philosophical issues, to an airing of opinion on politics and/or current affairs. The work is multi-layered, both physically (Baldwin can use glazes, diamond dust, collage and 3D media on top of his silkscreen surface) and in terms of meaning.

The motifs with which he plays often reccur- skeletons, swallows, crucifixes, childrens’ story book illustrations, spiders, robins, trees, knives, flowers, cartoon figures- and are often contradictory, creating an uncomfortable  and sometimes sinister paradox. Each motif has a meaning (swallows generally signify innocence for example), although the meanings can vary slightly from print to print depending on the overall ethos of the piece. Symbolism is key to Dan Baldwin’s oeuvre- both his own interpretation and the personal response of each viewer.  These symbols of death, life and love reflect Baldwin’s preoccupation with the ‘big questions’ of human existence.Born in Manchester, Baldwin studied at Eastbourne College of Art and Design and then Kent Institute of Art and Design. He lives and works in West Sussex. Baldwin’s work is collected and exhibited nationally and internationally.

His pieces have been bought by many people of interest including Liam Howlett, Maxim (The Prodigy), Patsy Palmer, Chris Packham, Gem Archer & Andy Bell (Oasis, Beady Eye), Jo Whiley, Petra Ecclestone, Holly Willoughby, Ant McPartlin, Sir Ronald Cohen, Shepard Fairey, Mark lanegan, Alison Mosshart & Jake Chapman, and he has worked with brands as diverse as Atomic Skis, Max factor, Sara Berman, thisisalimitededition.com and recently Paolo Nutini on his comeback album campaign of 2014.   He is in the permanent collection of the Groucho Club and Cafe Royal.

‘Cherry Blossom I’ is a spectacular Limited Edition Silkscreen Print by Artist, Dan Baldwin.

Price: £990

2016

80x86cm

Signed limited edition of 50

Screenprint with glazes

Part of a pair with Cherry Blossom II.

The word ‘Cherry Blossom’, in Japanese culture is a reminder that life is overwhelmingly beautiful, but also tragically short. Dan Baldwin sees both pieces in the diptych ‘Cherry Blossom I’ and ‘Cherry Blossom II’ take us on a personal journey and show us two room – in one we see his mantelpiece, a clock, and although they should inspire a sense of safety and comfort the rooms are filled with symbols of refuge; the bird returning to the nest, children climbing the stairs. Additionally, both rooms have a sense of time passing; a cracked vase, barbed wire fence, fire and rain clouds.

The Flood- signed limited edition silkscreen print with glazes by Dan Baldwin.

Price: £990

Edition of 100

Silkscreen print

2015

89×115.5cm

The Flood is an exploration of the power of nature; both its impressive beats and the force of wind and waves,

The Flood feels like the beginning of a new chapter in my work; I wanyed to simplify things, create more space. This piece is about the power of nature; the wind, the sea. I just think there’s something so magnificent about these animals, I wanted to bring them into an extreme environment. I love there to be metaphors and messages in my work; some people may look at this piece and see a comment about environmentalism, others might notice the nod to Hockney I included (the swimming pool), or maybe they’ll take away the idea that life is an uphill struggle, you have to keep on going- nature will carry on.’

This Is The Big City Baby- signed limited edition silkscreen print on paper with gold leaf, diamond dust and glazes by Dan Baldwin.

Price: £1200

Edition of 100

Silkscreen print

2014

95x56cm

This piece was created in collaboration with Allison Mosshart (lead singer of The Kills).

‘Alison Mosshart, lead singer of the band The kills, wrote a piece called ‘THIS IS THE BIG CITY BABY’ when sitting with jack White from the White Stripes, they had been sitting in New York by the wishing well fountain, and the events of that day prompted the written piece. It was then given to a project SFWAM – (Songs For Words and Music) which is a charity based literacy project with Jeff Antebi Waxspolitation records, pairing artists with musicians – Tom Waites, Nick Cave and many more. Alison had been hanging on for several years waiting for the right artist to illustrate her piece, my image was inspired by her writing – the cats and freaks come out at night whilst the city sleeps, as the clock strikes 12am some magic occurs. It’s quite a specific illustrative piece as it was a specific image for a project.’ Dan Baldwin.

TV Eyes- signed limited edition silkscreen print with gold leaf, diamond dust and glazes by contemporary artist Dan Baldwin.

Price: £1500

Edition of 100

Silkscreen print

2013

95x96cm

TV Eyes reflects both Baldwin’s concerns as the parent of a young child and the modern domestic environment generally. Figures, symbols, and motifs pertinent to these ideas populate the composition, and as the eyes of a telly addict glaze over and become mesmerised, so TV Eyesmelts into the abstract colour grid of Happy Happy;  after all what is a television screen but millions of tiny pixels of colour? The photographic image of a young boy on the left side of the piece represents the innocence and vulnerability of children as they are exposed to mass culture through the television screen.  Warm domestic and childhood motifs: the loving mother, toys, chicks, childish scribbling, are contrasted with darker imagery: skulls and eye sockets being pecked by those afore-mentioned innocent chicks, as well as scientific motifs- reflecting the beneficial educational power of TV.

Faith Less- signed limited edition silkscreen print on paper with glazes, diamond dust, gold ink, pearlised and embossing by British contemporary artist Dan Baldwin.

Price: £1300

Edition of 100

Silkscreen print

2013

108x90cm

Faith Less is an apocalyptic vision of the destruction that human society could bring upon itself through its consumerist focus. A figure representing ‘Faith’ is senn taking off from earth in a space shuttle whilst chaos envelops the ground below. This work develops ideas formed in an earlier series of paintings The road to Hellafter Hieronymus Bosch, whose complex schemes populated with symbols and imaginary figures have been a great inspiration to Baldwin.

Hope In Hell is a signed limited edition silkscreen print

Price: £875

22 colours plus glazes on paper

Edition of 125

2011

75.5×73.5cm

A stunning counterpart to Death at the Parade, Hope In Hell is perhaps more overtly political. With veiled references to the conflict in Iraq: Iraqi money, tanks, British and American flags, a palm tree, skulls and skeletons symbolising death and futility, this piece could easily have crossed the line into polemicism or outright negativity. However, Baldwin makes figures of children central to his composition, obliging the viewer consider the effects of war o those who are powerless, but also a message of redemption and hope for the future. This message is reinforced by the presence of birds; a key motif in Baldwin’s works that is representative of freedom and liberation. The packed composition and bold palette give a feeling of spontaneity that underlies the skilful balance of elements and colours that Baldwin has painstakingly created.

Death at the Parade is a signed limited edition silkscreen print

Price: £650

24 colours and glazes on paper

Edition of 125

2011

73.5×73.5cm

Inspired by a painting that Baldwin saw in a museum in Mexico, a skeleton looms over a sleeping child. The composition has a dream-like quality as the central figure is asleep and is surrounded by a carnival-like scene with animals, freaky creatures, flags, anatomical diagrams and the skeleton looking away into the distance where we see the silhouette of a church.  Perhaps this is a parade of characters from the little girl’s dream, though the predominance of skeletal imagery – both human and animal- suggests the presence of death. Baldwin juxtaposes innocence and mortality, the sinister and the nostalgic in a carefully balanced and energetic work.

The Marriage- signed limited edition silkscreen print with gold leaf, embossing and glazes by Dan Baldwin.

Price: £2250

An Edition of 50

Silkscreen print

2014

71.8x86cm

‘I really like making the pieces that don’t have any perspective, that are more musical, because everything has to balance perfectly. The Marriage is a good example; it’s about movement, form and feeling. It’s hard to put your finger on it, but I think it’s about two forms clashing, like a man and a woman, and creating life. I think you can look for longer and the abstract compositions, they have a weird effect on you visually; the lack of perspective allows your eye to bounce off every colour and every element.’

TANTRUM CONFESSION signed limited edition silkscreen print with gold and silver leaf, diamond dust, pearl, stain and high-gloss glazes, embossing and glow in the dark ink by British contemporary artist Dan Baldwin. 24 colours.

Price: £1250

An Edition of 100

Silkscreen print

2012

83x84cm

‘My paintings from 2011 were heading to an almost textural, ethereal, abstract place. This work and other pieces in the  series were heavily layered and went to a dreamlike, poetic space with no perspective. The use of pattern and shape and a childlike scribble  is possibly influenced by  my experience of parenthood. The piece is quite complex but really simple as well; it’s aggressive, and really gentle and calm -as thats how I am when I work. My work is directly affected by the music I listen to whilst I paint; like Mozart fighting Motorhead! I called it HURRICANE TANTRUM CONFESSION originally, like a whirlwind of emotion and activity, then changed it to  just TANTRUM CONFESSION: an explosion of activity and calm. As a child I stole £5 to buy five pen-knifes, so I incorporated that into this work with the child’s knife. I was also brought up catholic, so I’ve linked into that. It’s a very thoughtful work and not obviously clear in meaning, quite complex but also really simple- more emotionally based. Interestingly I went on to make two completely abstract colour works after this, and I think you can see the beginnings of that way of thinking here in the coloured squares.’

Happy Happy– signed limited edition silkscreen print with glazes by Dan Baldwin.

Price: £1250

Edition of 100

Silkscreen print

2013

95x95cm

Happy Happy is an abstract exercise in colour and form, in which Baldwin plays with the ideas of art as therapy, and how chance can be incorporated into art.  Ink dripped from pipettes created the lines of the grid; the element of chance dictating whether the lines merge, become fatter or thinner or veer off.  He then counted every blank area created by the grid (1829 in total) filling each one with one of one hundred colour tones he had mixed. The act of filling each blank square and choosing the tone that created the best balance and harmony was a very satisfying and almost therapeutic process for the artist,

‘You realise that an experiment in randomness is not possible. As an artist you are making instinctive decisions-may be subconsciously-all the time; which colour should sit next to another and so on. There is a satisfaction in being liberated from figurative composition, being free to balance colour and form only. Once the work was completed I found it really hard to drag my eyes away from it; there is something mesmerising about 100 colours competing with each other and merging together. It reminded me of when you stare at a television screen and your eyes go off into pixellated abstraction.’

Lost Souls II– signed limited edition silkscreen print on paper with glazes, gold, silver and bronze ink by contemporary artist Dan Baldwin.

Price: £475

Edition of 100

Silkscreen print

2013

51.8×50.1cm

Dan Baldwin,

‘When you look at my prints compared to the original paintings, they have a totally different quality to them. It suddenly becomes about thirty layers of colour separation, all the finishings and glazings and flourishes are different. The collaboration is the fun part really, like using gold leaf and embossing. And that’s what it’s all about really. Printmaking is a major part of being an artist, you know you’ve got that element of stability. That is essential, because it gives you the freedom to focus on your work- working at Coriander also allows me to be more experimental.’

Anomie- signed limited edition silkscreen print with gold leaf, embossing and glazes by Dan Baldwin.

Price: £1500

An Edition of 75

Silkscreen print

2015

119x120cm

Anomie. Noun.

1. Social instability caused by erosion of standards and values.

2. Alienation and purposelessness experienced by a person or a social group as a result of a lack of standards, values or ideals.

‘I wanted to combine elements of two previous prints that I have made; the tone and warmth of Love (2012) and the dynamism of the nuetron-like exploding circle motif inCyclone (2011). This work is contradictory; the happy warm colour draws you in, but the imagery is dark and disconcerting- reflecting the instability and sense of dislocation of the state of anomie. Natural elements v. man made objects, innocence v. corruption, security v. conflict, religion v. pantheism, ornament v. rawness, youth v. decay- I am exploring all of these juxtapositions.’

Cyclone signed limited edition silkscreen print

Price: £1200

embossing, gold leaf, diamond dust and collaged elements on paper

Edition of 75

2011

102x99cm

Cyclone is a signature piece by Dan Baldwin featuring the themes and imagery for which this young British artist has become renowned. Baldwin states that his work is ‘about the fine line between the sinister and the beautiful’  it as at once joyful and profound. The universal themes that he tackles in cyclone include love and death, the brutality and beauty of nature and decay, religion and liberty. Found images and objects are combined with swathes of colour, graffiti-like markings, diagrams and drawings (reflecting Baldwin’s training as an illustrator) creating a melee of colour, movement and visual diversity against a black backdrop. This powerful image is centred around a golden knife, which sports a single drop of scarlet blood; representative of violence and passion. Overall Cyclone is a memento mori; a reminder of the brevity and ephemeral nature of life, as delicate as a butterfly or bird’s wing.
