“There were opium dens where one could buy oblivion, dens of horror where the memory of old sins could be destroyed by the madness of sins that were new.” Oscar Wilde in his novel, ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray’ (1891). These two skulls hint back to Victorian East London and the Opium Dens that sprung up in the 19th Century. The juxtaposition of the victorian-esque florals, Chinoiserie palettes with the skulls becoming something that could appear to someone who was smoking Opium. Beautiful but at the same time terrifying. – Magnus Gjoen on this limited edition piece.
