Matthew Ashurst is currently intrigued by the link between ‘Street Art’ and ‘Fine Art’. Using found objects such as science lab boxes as canvasses, his works are carefully crafted and more like opportunist installations.
“For some time now I have endeavoured to find a way of working that operates on a visceral level. I use gestural mark making juxtaposed to crafted figuarative elements in order to cause a contrast and conflict as well as flirting with typographical elements. These elements are ingredients that undertake a process that forms an important part of my practice, this tension I believe is the key to my engagement with the work…I find myself re-purposing furniture, antique photographs, sheet music, packaging in order to reminisce and re-direct, these items are already loaded with information ready for re-interpretation.”
