Caroline Yates Artist Biography
Caroline Yates subjects include crowds or multiples, observing the relationships and choreographic patterns they form, be it city commuters or other animals and their behaviour. She is interested in the anonymity of crowds; the security and comfort, or threat and menace of large numbers and the way we, as crowds are sometimes unwittingly channelled or herded into spaces.
Caroline Yates works from her photography in oils on canvas. Patterns and repeats feature in some of the paintings – imagery slipping off the boundaries of the canvases, suggesting an infinite roll of humanity rather than a picture confined to a square or rectangle.
Following completion of her MA at The Royal College of Art in 1995 Caroline Yates worked as a textile designer and illustrator. She started painting full time in 2000 and completed further MA studies in fine art printmaking in 2001. In addition to exhibiting on an annual basis at galleries and art fairs internationally, Caroline Yates has completed corporate commissions for companies such as 3i plc.
